Summer is here and if you have multiple sclerosis (MS), you may not be welcoming the warm weather. People with MS know firsthand how heat can worsen symptoms. If that isn’t already troubling, MS can make you sensitive to changes in temperature.
This intolerance to heat happens because the myelin, or protective covering around the nerves, is damaged and doesn’t function as it should when the body is overheated. This can cause problems with balance, feeling, vision or strength. Because these issues can lead to falls, it’s important to try to stay cool and bring your body temperature down if you’re feeling overheated.
Stay cool on hot summer days by trying these tips.
Ice
Ice is a quick and easy way to cool down. Try placing some ice on the back of your neck, forehead or inside of your wrist. If you don’t have ice, get a rag wet with cold water and use that instead.
Avoid the Heat by Staying Inside
Check the weather each day to see when the temperature is going to be warm and use this information to plan your activities. For example, if you know it’s going to be hottest around noon, limit your time outside and try to stay in an air-conditioned environment during that part of the day.
Exercise Carefully
Avoid outdoor exercise when the weather is warm. Exercising in an air-conditioned gym is a great way to stay fit without overheating. Swimming or water aerobics are also great ways to exercise and stay cool during the summer. When working out, it’s always smart to take breaks, stay hydrated and wear breathable clothing.
Use Cooling Products
Try using cooling products like neck wraps, vests and bandanas when you’re outdoors. If you’re unsure about which products to use, check out the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s cooling equipment vendor list.
Take Breaks
Whether you’re inside or outside, if you’re starting to feel too warm, take a break. If you feel dizzy, faint or sweaty, take a break and sip some water. This would also be a good time to apply ice or cooling products.
Avoid Hot Foods
Instead of turning on your oven or stove and heating up your home, try eating cold foods like salads or sandwiches. Popsicles and slushies also make great summer treats that cool you off.
Air Conditioning
Staying in an air-conditioned environment as much as possible will help you stay cool. If you don’t have air conditioning, you may qualify for discounts or tax credits on electricity bills for air conditioning due to medical necessity.
If you’re looking for additional tips, try asking members of an MS support group, either in-person or online, how they stay cool in the summer. Your doctor or pharmacist can also offer some guidance.
